[A Commentary] Socio-Economic Wellbeing Is the Backbone of a Nation—Prioritise the Vulnerable.

The 2024/25 Citizens Budget is estimated at MK5.99 trillion. Encouragingly, the combined allocations to key social sectors benefiting children have increased slightly from 29.3% in 2023/24 to 31.1% of Total Government Expenditure. These include:

Education: 14.8%

Health: 9.2%

Social Protection: 3.7%

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH): 3.4%

While this progress is commendable, The Grown Too Quick Foundation (GTQF) urges the Malawi Government to sustain and expand social spending, particularly in social protection programs. Vulnerable children and families continue to bear the brunt of climate-induced disasters like cyclones, El Niño-driven droughts, and the rising challenges of inflation and unemployment.

Prioritising the most at-risk populations is not just an economic necessity—it’s a moral imperative. A nation’s strength lies in the well-being of its people.
